  In quartan malaria caused by Plasmodium malariae, the trophozoites are seen as a band form (Giemsa). Infected red cells are not swollen.  
       

 

  Quartan malaria is seen worldwide, but is relatively infrequent. Most of the lethal children's cases suffer from falciparum (malignant) malaria.
