The conjunctiva is highly hyperemic. Aged patients hospitalized for a long period are susceptible to staphylococcal conjunctivitis.   Cocci are phagocytized by neutrophils (Giemsa).
     
   
     
The cocci phagocytized by neutrophils are Gram-positive (Gram).
