Accumulation of macrophages phagocytizing nuclear debris (apoptotic bodies) is seen mainly in the paracortex of the enlarged lymph node (HE, low power). Kikuchi's disease is common in the cervical node of young Japanese. Activated lymphoid cells are dispersed among macrophages phagocytizing apoptotic bodies (HE). Human herpes virus-6 genome is demonstrable in the lesion, but the etiological significance of HHV6 has been questioned.
