Case 88. Influenza (15 y-o M)
         
    Autopsied lung of of a fat boy suddenly dead after running in the school (influenza encephalopathy provoked by the use of antifebrile drug was clinically suspected)

Mild chronic inflammation with inflammatory edema is seen in the medium-sized bronchus. Due to autolysis, the ciliated cells have been detached off (HE).   Ciliated cells are accumulated in the lumen of small bronchi, where inflammatory change is minimal (HE).
     
   
     
Influenza virus antigen was identified in the cytoplasm of the ciliated cells, confirming the diagnosis of influenza (immunostaining).
