Case 52.
Helicobacter-like organisms infected on gallbladder mucosa (54 y-o F)

Surgical specimen of chronic cholecystitis

Key words :  Helicobacter-like organism, Helicobacter bilis, cholecystitis

Fuzzy filamentous and coiled microbes are seen on the mildly inflamed gallbladder mucosa (HE). Oil immersion observation discloses finely basophilic, elongated microbes on the columnar epithelium (HE).

The microbes express Helicobacter pylori-related antigens (immunostaining). Infection of H. bilis is suspected.
