Case 48.  Brucellosis (38 y-o M)
    An autopsied Japanese physician suffering from prolonged lung and liver dysfunction    
Key words :  Brucella abortus, brucellosis, microgranuloma
Microgranulomas mainly consisting of xanthomatous cells are identified in the liver parenchyma (HE). No necrosis is observed.   CT scan of the thorax shows multifocal, ill-defined infiltrative shadows in the peripheral lungs. Pleural thickening is associated.
Features of organizing pneumonia are seen in the lung (HE). No granulomatous reaction is observed. B. abortus was cultured from the lung at autopsy.
