Case 47.  Melioidosis (41 y-o M)
         
    Japanese diabetic man who stayed in southeastern Asia, presenting multiple abscess in the liver, spleen and salivary gland

The splenectomy specimen demonstrates large encapsulated abscess cavities (HE, low power). Infection of B. pseudomallei is endemic in the southeastern Asia.   Epithelioid granulomatous reaction is discerned at the periphery of the abscess (HE, high power).

Suppurative granuloma in the liver and spleen caused by cat scratch disease, infection of Bartonella henselae (25 y-o F) (HE). The splenectomy specimen demonstrates large encapsulated abscess cavities, showing the histology quite similar to melioidosis (HE, low power).
