Case 33. EBV-induced hairy leukoplakia of tongue (54 y-o M)
         
    Thickening of the lateral part of the tongue mucosa, biopsied from an HIV-negative patient receiving hemodialysis

White mucosal thickening is seen along the lateral margin of the tongue (gross findings).   Acanthotic thickening of the non-keratinizing squamous mucosa seen (HE, low power).
     
 
     
Intranuclear inclusions are seen in the superficially located squamous epithelium (HE, high power).   EBER-1 reactivity is observed in the nuclear inclusions (in situ hybridization). This is an exceptional situation, in which EBV forms nuclear inclusions.
