Case 22. Blastocystis hominis infection (43 y-o M)

Cytospun pathogens after anaerobic co-culture with fecal bacteria (stool specimen was obtained from an asymptomatic individual)

Key words : Blastocystis hominis, anerobic culture

Cyst-forming microbes of varying sizes observed in the feces (Papanicolaou) Cyst-forming microbes of varying sizes observed in the feces (Giemsa)

Electron micrograph showing a cystic space and peripherally located round nucleus. Fine fibrillar mucoid matrix surrounds the microbe. Rods are seen adjacent to the mitochondria-containing cystic microbe. The function of mitochondria in this obligate anaerobe remains mystery (electron micrograph).
